Our Photographic Philosophy
At Great Lakes Photo Tours, our photographic philosophy remains: ”Capture it in the field, not in the ‘shop!'"
So many photographers are convinced that in the JPG-versus-RAW shooting contest, RAW wins. We strongly disagree!
Ask Yourself...
- Why pay such big bucks for your camera and then use NONE of the very expensive microprocessor’s capabilities built in by the manufacturer? Would you purchase a Ferrari and put plastic seat covers on the leather?
- Why depend on generic, third party computer software that cannot account for the unique, specific algorithms built into each camera model by the designers?
Camera Engineers Ensure Ultimate Performance
The engineers at Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Pentax, Fuji, Sony, Nikon and Canon cameras know their camera models and the imaging sensor inside. Trust us; these folks KNOW each product’s capabilities and provide the tools to maximize their ultimate performance. We encourage photographers to explore and master their camera controls and settings, refining the image in the camera itself. In ascribing to this philosophy, the moment of capture completes the creation, just as it did with the transparency film we all used in “the olden days.”
Use Your Camera’s Capabilities…Embrace Real Photography
We selected film types by subject; nature demanded Velvia or Provia, capitalizing on the level of color saturation desired for various subjects while portraits required Astia for its soft skin tones. Digital camera models (even within the same brand) see color differently – just look at how the 50 different TV screens look in Costco. We feel the same about your selection of digital cameras. Know your camera’s capabilities, use them to your best advantage and spend time out in the world creating your images instead of sitting for hours in a dimly lit room in front of a computer screen. Isn’t that why you embraced photography in the first place?
We all romanticize resting our camera and tripod on our shoulder as we hike through nature’s splendor. Did you really envision spending days in “shop class” – a darkened room, moving around a small rodent-named device – a slave to your “workflow”?
“Capturing-the-Real-Moment” Photography
Please watch the video by first-class commercial photographer, Will Crockett. Learn when to use JPEG and RAW.
Then, join us on a Great Lakes Eco-Photo Tour or Eco-Photo Excursion and return to “Capturing the moment” photography. You’ll delight in the art of crafting images in the field, not in the shop and truly appreciate the complete naturalist photographer experience.
“We take pride in promoting an awareness and appreciation for our natural resources, encouraging through artistic enjoyment and ecological education, the necessity of environmental preservation.”
